Amazon Just Launched an AI Tool to Match You With a Shelter Dog — Here's How It Works
Amazon has launched an AI-powered tool that matches potential adopters with shelter dogs based on lifestyle and preferences — just in time for National Pet Day.
This National Pet Day, finding your perfect shelter dog just got a whole lot easier — and a whole lot more high-tech.
Amazon has launched its first-ever pet adoption experience: an AI-powered matching tool that helps potential adopters discover dogs (and cats) based on their lifestyle, living situation, and preferences. Developed in partnership with PetArmor and Best Friends Animal Society, the tool is part of the "Protect Playtime" campaign — and it couldn't have arrived at a better time.
Because right now, every 90 seconds, a dog or cat is killed in a U.S. shelter simply because they don't have a safe place to call home.
What the Tool Does (and Why It Matters)
The adoption hub, live now at amazon.com/ProtectPlaytime, uses natural language processing to interpret text-based prompts about your ideal dog. Think of it like asking a knowledgeable shelter volunteer who knows every single available pet — except this one never sleeps and can search across multiple cities in seconds.
You can type in something like "I need a low-energy dog good for apartments" or "a playful medium-sized dog who's good with kids," and the AI analyzes factors including temperament, energy level, living situation compatibility, and household composition. It then returns personalized matches from Best Friends Animal Society centers nationwide, complete with photos and profiles.
"The best part of working on this was aligning everything around one question: 'How do we help more of our country's adoptable pets in shelters find the healthy, happy homes they deserve?'" says Lauren Anderson, U.S. Head of Amazon Ads Brand Innovation Lab. "That North Star drove every decision — the AI matching tool, the generative videos, the shelter spaces."
Where the Tool Searches
The AI currently pulls from Best Friends' database of adoptable pets at their centers in:
- Houston, Texas
- Los Angeles, California
- New York City, New York
- Northwest Arkansas
- Salt Lake City, Utah
- Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah — the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary, home to up to 1,600 animals on any given day
Best Friends also partners with more than 5,500 shelters and rescue groups across the country, so their reach extends far beyond these six locations. If you're not near one of these centers, the campaign still raises awareness — and Best Friends' shelter statistics dashboard can help you find adoption resources in your community.
More Than Just a Matching Tool
The "Protect Playtime" campaign goes beyond the AI matchmaker. Here's the full picture:
- AI-generated videos: For featured pets still looking for homes, Amazon Ads created personalized animated videos showing how each animal might thrive in a real home environment — giving potential adopters a glimpse of what life together could look like.
- Shelter renovations: In February, PetArmor and Amazon built a custom dog park and "catio" at Glen Rose Animal Control in Texas, transforming one of Best Friends' shelter partners into a playful space where animals' personalities can truly shine.
- Passive charitable giving: The campaign includes a streaming component so even watching content can support shelter pets.
- Shoppable pet products: PetArmor products are available directly, making it easy to stock up on essentials for your new family member.
The Numbers Behind the Need
If you're wondering why something like this matters, the data tells a stark story:
- Roughly 6.5 million animals enter U.S. shelters each year, according to the ASPCA
- Only about 3.2 million are adopted — meaning millions are left behind
- An estimated 670,000 dogs are euthanized in shelters annually
- About 25% of shelter dogs are purebreds — adoption isn't just for mixed breeds
- The good news: 2 out of 3 U.S. shelters are now no-kill (90%+ save rate), according to Best Friends Animal Society
Best Friends' data also reveals something hopeful: there are more than enough homes in America for every shelter pet. The challenge isn't capacity — it's connection. Tools like Amazon's AI matcher aim to bridge exactly that gap.
Why National Pet Day Is the Perfect Time to Adopt
National Pet Day, celebrated every April 11, was founded by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige in 2006 to honor the bond between humans and their pets — and to draw attention to shelter animals still waiting for homes.
If you've been considering adding a dog to your family, here's why today is an ideal day to start looking:
- Many shelters run adoption specials around National Pet Day, including reduced fees and waived application costs
- Spring is prime adoption season — warmer weather makes it easier to settle a new dog into your routine with outdoor walks and socialization
- Shelter dogs are ready to love. Most have been temperament-tested, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and are just waiting for someone to give them a chance
Tips for Finding Your Perfect Match
Whether you use Amazon's new AI tool or visit your local shelter, here's how to set yourself up for a successful adoption:
- Be honest about your lifestyle. A high-energy Border Collie isn't the right fit for a studio apartment with long work hours. Think about your daily routine, activity level, and living space before you start browsing.
- Consider adult dogs. Puppies are adorable, but adult dogs often come house-trained, past the destructive chewing phase, and with established personalities — what you see is what you get.
- Ask about foster history. Dogs who've been in a foster home have been observed in a real-life setting. Foster families can tell you how a dog handles everything from thunderstorms to the mailman.
- Don't judge by kennel behavior. Shelters are stressful. A dog who seems withdrawn or hyperactive in a kennel might be completely different once they decompress in a calm home.
- Budget for the first year. The ASPCA estimates the first year of dog ownership costs between $1,500 and $2,000, including food, supplies, and vet care. Planning ahead means fewer surprises.
The Bottom Line
Amazon's AI adoption tool is a genuinely exciting step forward for shelter animals. It makes the search process easier, more personalized, and more accessible — which means more dogs (and cats) finding the loving homes they deserve.
This National Pet Day, whether you're ready to adopt, foster, volunteer, or simply share a post about an adoptable pet in your area, every action counts. The data shows we're closer than ever to making every shelter in America no-kill. Tools like this help close the gap.
Try the tool yourself at amazon.com/ProtectPlaytime, or visit bestfriends.org to browse adoptable pets near you.
